Gran Guitarra Quartet (2009)

When four young musicians from three different countries team up and form a guitar quartet, it can be a risk. Because quite a few guitar experts will draw comparisons to famous group such as the Romeros or the LAGQ and set the bar for a young quartet high, perhaps even unattainably high. In this regard, the Gran Guitarra must not fear: the four of them present with this CD, their debut, a fine sounding business card that is really fun and doesn’t need to shy away from any comparison. The opening “Carmen Suite” based on Bizet’s famous opera proves after a few bars that nobody has to worry about the future of the classical guitar. The four guitarists, some of them only in their early twenties and still studying, impress with their perfect ensemble playing – technical, rhythmical, tonal and, above all, musical. In doing so, they effortlessly master the most varied of repertoire: Domeniconi’s “Oyun” sounds with sophisticated dynamics and impressive rhythmic security; the melodies, presented with a strikingly variable tone, expressive and without false emotiveness, testify to the great sensitivity of the musicians. Also really great is the furious interpretation of the highly virtuoso Toccata by Leo Brouwer, which marks the worthy finale of this album, for which this young group definitely earned a bravo!
